Mike Taylor from Hopkins Architects spoke at Cooper Union friday night. He talked about the London Velodrome they worked on for the 2012 Olympics and explained how they looked at the bicycle for inspiration. A bicycle is beautiful and graceful but at the same time every piece of it serves a very important purpose. Its beauty derives from efficiency. They approached the design of the Velodrome in this way.  My favorite feature is the roof structure.  It is composed of cables that were carefully calculated and assembled on the ground and then pulled into place by a system of hydraulics, ultimately resembling the strings on a tennis racket.  This method of construction is safe, fast, lightweight, sustainable, and at the same time emits this simple beauty.  -VERONICA
